The Chad Brown trained Sierra Leone won the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic, snapping a three race winning streak for the chalk in the marquee event of the two-day championship. Let’s take a look at the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic betting trends.
The colt was the 14th three-year old to win the Classic and the fifth in the last 11 years. His win was the first for a three-year-old since Authentic ($10.40) in 2020. That was trainer Bob Baffert’s fourth Classic win and all four have been with three-year-olds. All four of his wins have come in the last 11 years.

Over the last 13 years we have seen six speed horses win the race on the front end. While horses with a closing style won the race from 2006 to 2011, since then horses on or relatively close to the pace have had the advantage. From 2007 to 2011 the winner of the Classic was 10 or more lengths back after a half mile. In the last 13 years every winner was within four lengths of the lead after a half mile except last year’s winner Sierra Leone.
Chalky Classic?
The average win payoff in the history of the Classic is $22.92 and over the last 13 years that number is a paltry $9.53. The betting favorite has won 12 of the 41 runnings. The second choice in the wagering has won the Classic six times while the third choice in the wagering has won the race five times. Flightline was the shortest price in Classic history, returning just $2.88 in 2022.
Pleasantly Perfect in 2003 was the last Classic winner to win without having a previous G1 victory. Only three other Classic winners had not won a G1—Concern, Alphabet Soup and Volponi.
Since Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert reeled off three Classic wins in a row from 2014 to 2016, in the last eight years, we have seen seven different trainers win, the only two-time winner being John Sadler with Accelerate in 2018 and Flightline in 2022. Sadler picked up a win last year in the Dirt Mile with Full Serrano and is now 3 for 60 overall with Breeders’ Cup starters.

A Sharp Prep is Important
A sharp final prep is important. 25 Classic winners won their final prep. Another 10 ran second in the final prep. Sierra Leone was third in the Travers last year in his final prep.
Post positions have not been much of a factor in the Classic. The winner has exited the 12 post four times and the 14 post twice. The 1 post is just 2 for 41. The best winning post is the 4 which has produced seven winners. Sierra Leone broke from the 11-post last year. The 10 and 11 posts have both produced three winners.
Since 2010, the Classic winner had at least one of the final two preps in New Yok 13 times. Four of the last eight winners ran in the Whitney.
Winning Profile
The winning profile according to the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic Betting Trends is to look at the obvious. Over the past 12 years we have had just two winners pay above $14 to win. Could it be more of the same this year? Let’s look for a contender that is coming off a sharp win or game second in a G1 race at nine furlongs or longer. (Seven of this year’s pre-entered horses are coming in off a win, so good luck). Last year we wrote, “One with good tactical speed to be on or close to the lead.” However, that left Sierra Leone out of the mix, and he proved us wrong.
