Let’s take a quick look at Friday’s Breeders’ Cup races by the numbers:

$1 Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1)

The two-day championship event kicks off with the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) at five furlongs.

The last four winners of the race made their final prep overseas including last year’s upset winner Magnum Force ($27.00). The colt came into the race with four races under his belt, his final prep a third in the Flying Childers (G2) at Doncaster.

Wesley Ward won the race three years in a row from 2019 to 2021, all three wins with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. in the irons. His last two winners, Twilight Gleaming ($12.40) and Golden Pal ($3.60) both made starts overseas.

$1 Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf

The home team has had a tough go in this race, U.S. based runners winning just five times while the Euro invaders have taken 13 including the last four.

The last three winners of this race made their final prep in France. Last year’s winner was Henri Matisse ($9.80) who came in off a fifth-place finish in the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere (G1) at Longchamp. The 2023 victor Unquestionable ($5.00) ran second in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagaedere (G1) and the 2022 winner Victoria Road ($13.14) won the Prix de Conde (G3) at Chantilly.

Trainer Aiden O’Brien saddled the last three winners and has won this race a record seven times. Jockey Ryan Moore has ridden all seven of those winners.

The last U.S. based winner was the Mike Maker trained Fire At Will at Keeneland in 2020. The colt lit up the toteboard paying $62.40. The colt came into the race off a gate to wire score in the Pilgrim (G2) at Belmont Park. The Pilgrim has produced three winners of this race.

In the 18 runnings of this race no winner has taken the field gate to wire. Only four of the winners have paid less than $10.00.

Horses breaking from the one post have won the race three times in the last eight editions. Last year Henri Matisse broke from the 12 post.

$1 Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

While the Euros dominate the Juvenile Turf, the U.S. based barns fare much better in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, winning 13 of the 17 editions.

That is mostly thanks to trainer Chad Brown, who has won the race six times. The trainer won three in a row from 2016 to 2018, and his most recent win came in 2023 with Hard to Justify ($20.20). Brown has saddled 26 starters in the race.

Aiden O’Brien has shipped 19 runners for this race but has won just twice, with Mediate ($6.08) in 2022 and Lake Victoria ($3.40) last year. Jockey Ryan Moore was aboard both winners.

While the Euros have won just four times, they often round out the exotics. Overseas invaders have completed the exacta seven times and have run third four times. Superfecta players take note: A Euro has run fourth seven years in a row.

$2 Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

This race used to be one of the most chalk friendly. The favorite won seven years in a row from 2002 to 2008, and again in 2010 and 2011. However, since then in the past 13 years the betting favorite has won just three times, including last year with Immersive ($6.00) winning for trainer Brad Cox.

Immersive prepped by winning the Alcibiades (G1) at Keeneland. She was the third winner of the race to exit the Alcibiades in the last six years. The other key race is the Frizette (G1) in New York. That race has produced 15 Juvenile Fillies winners.

No Breeders’ Cup race has seen more favorites win overall, with 20 favorites winning in the 41 runnings of the race. The betting favorite has run in the top three spot 30 times.

But do note the $29.77 average payoff going back 13 years, thanks to Ria Antonia ($66.60), Take Charge Brandi ($125.40), and Champagne Room ($69.30). If the favorite does not win, it’s bombs away!

$2 Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile

Speed has fared well in the Juvenile the past couple of years leading to upsets. Citizen Bull wired the field last year for trainer Bob Baffert, returning $33.80 to win. Fierceness prompted the early pace and prevailed in winning in 2023 for Todd Pletcher, returning his backers $35.00.

Horses on or prompting the pace have produced five of the last nine winners of the race. Favorites have won 13 of the 41 editions of the race. The betting favorite has run second eight times and third six times.

Baffert has won the Juvenile six times with 39 starters. Pletcher has won the race four times from 28 starters.

The American Pharoah (G1) has been the most productive prep race in recent years, the winner exiting the race in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2024. The other key races are the Champagne (G1) and Breeders’ Futurity (G1).
