Located about an hour from Washington D.C., Charles Town is the premier racing destination in West Virginia. The track first conducted racing in 1933, and when a casino opened on the property, purses increased enough to attract horses from around the Mid Atlantic region.
The main track at Charles Town is six furlongs meaning 6 and 6 ½ furlong races are run around two turns and 1 1/16 miles and around three turns.
Racing takes place at Charles Town 12 months out of the year. Most months the track runs from Thursday through Saturday with nighttime racing. From November through February, Charles Town also runs on Wednesday nights.
The $1 million Charles Town Classic (G2) is the marquee race at Charles Town. The 1 1/8-mile test for older runners draws some of the top horses in the handicap division each year. The race is held each year in late August or early September.
Among the winners of the Charles Town Classic are Game On Dude, and two-time winners Skippylongstocking, Art Collector and Researcher.
The $300,000 Charles Town Oaks (G3) is at seven furlongs for three-year-old fillies.
The $200,000 Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes (G3) is at 1 1/16 miles.
The $100,000 Misty Bennett Pink Ribbon Stakes at six furlongs.
