The track was originally opened in 1990 and named Dueling Grounds Race Course. It was rebranded as Kentucky Downs in 1998 and with purses fueled by Historical Horse Racing machines (slots), the track attracts many of the top owners, trainers, jockeys and horses each year for their abbreviated race meeting.
Kentucky Downs will be racing just seven days in 2025. Opening Day is August 28. The track will then race on August 30 and 31, as well as September 4,6,7, and 10.
Kentucky Turf Cup (G3): This is the flagship event of the meet, offering a purse of $1 million. It’s run over a distance of 1 1/2 miles on the turf and attracts top-tier horses, often serving as a prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Mint Millions: Introduced more recently, this race has quickly become one of the highest purses in North American racing, with a purse of $2 million. It’s a 1 1/8 mile turf race, drawing elite turf horses from around the country.
Calumet Turf Cup (G2): Another notable race with a significant purse, this one is run over 1 1/2 miles, attracting horses looking to make a statement in their preparation for larger stakes races.
FanDuel Turf Sprint: A Grade 3 event that covers 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, this race is known for its speed and has a substantial purse, making it an attractive option for sprinters.
