Louisiana Downs opened in 1974. Their first marquee race was the Super Derby, which offered a $500,000 purse which at the time was one of the richest races in the U.S. for three-year-olds. The racetrack is located in Bossier City.

The 2025 quarterhorse meeting at Louaiaia Downs runs from January 9 to March 29. After a month break, the thoroughbreds take center stage for a meeting that runs from May 3 to September 26.

What Are the Big Races at Louisiana Downs?

Quarter Horse Meeting

Mardi Gras Futurity (G2): One of the premier quarterhorse races at Louisiana Downs, this event happens towards the end of the quarterhorse meet, typically in late March. It’s known for its substantial purse and is the first official futurity of the year.

Louisiana Downs Futurity (G2): Run on the same day as the Mardi Gras Futurity, this race is also for two-year-olds and adds to the excitement of the closing days of the quarterhorse season.

Mardi Gras Derby: A race for three-year-old Louisiana-breds, held near the end of the meet.

Mardi Gras Oaks: The counterpart to the Mardi Gras Derby, this race is for three-year-old Louisiana-bred fillies.

Billy Montgomery Stakes: Another stake for older horses, specifically Louisiana-bred fillies and mares.

Lip Chip LLC Stakes: This race targets horses three years old and up.

Thoroughbred Meeting:

Super Derby: Historically, the most prestigious race at Louisiana Downs, the Super Derby was established in 1980. Although its status has fluctuated over the years, including periods where it lost its graded status, it remains a highlight of the racing calendar.
