The curtain closes on the Remington Park meeting on Friday night with six stakes including the $300,000 Springboard Mile.
A field of 12 juveniles will line up to go a mile in the final race of the meeting. The Springboard Mile is a Road to the Kentucky Derby points race, with 10-5-3-2-1 points up for grabs toward entry into the Run for the Roses next spring.
The Ron Moquett trained Speed King is the 7-2 morning line favorite. The colt was an impressive winner going six furlongs in his debut at Churchill Downs on Nov. 1.
“He has been at Oaklawn (the trainer’s home base in Hot Springs, Ark.) and he looks very good,” Moquett said. “The Springboard has always been my first choice for this colt. He is a nice horse. As good as he did at Churchill Downs, I wasn’t sure if he would be the favorite in the Springboard, but I’m not surprised. That was a good field at Churchill.”
Trainer Steve Asmussen has won the Springboard Mile in three of the last six years and sends out a trio of runners in Blue Angel (15-1), Complex Music (8-1) and Keeno (12-1).

Let’s head out to Remington Park for Friday night’s featured race of the night:
Remington Park Race 12 The Springboard Mile Post time 10:26 CT
9 Dr Ruben M 6-1
3 Speed King 7-2
7 Jolly Samurai 4-1
4 Dominant Spirit 15-1
Dr Ruben M
This colt ships in from SoCal for the Doug O’Neill barn. The son of Vino Rosso earned his diploma last out in his fourth career start, getting the job going a mile at Santa Anita. The runner up and third place finishers came back to run second and third in their next starts.
Three back in his second career start he was fifth behind Getaway Car, who returned to win the Best Pal (G3) in his next start and was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) in his most recent outing. He colt has worked sharply since his maiden score and owns solid early and mid pace numbers in a race with some early zip signed up. Decent value if he goes off near his 6-1 morning line.
Speed King
His debut effort was a gate to wire score at Churchill Downs going six furlongs and the colt earned the top last out speed figure. Five he beat have come back to run with one next out winner and one second. The $150,000 Ocala purchase has enough pedigree on the dam side to handle the stretch out to a mile, by Volatile out of a Corinthian mare that won going a mile on turf, her lone other winner coming at a sprint.
Breaking from the three post he figures to be on the lead but may end up having some company. The main knock may end up the price, which could end up lighter than the 5-2 morning line.
Jolly Samurai
This gelding was just a $8,000 purchase and has been perfect in three starts including a pair of stakes wins over the Remington Park surface. Last out he came with a six wide run to get up late and win the Clever Trevor at seven furlongs.
His highest speed figure came two back when winning the Kip Deville at six panels in his first start against winners. The gelding has some late foot and should be coming late in a race that should produce an honest pace in front of him.
