About Laurel Park Horse Racing Betting

Laurel Park, a historic thoroughbred racetrack located just outside Laurel, Maryland, opened on October 2, 1911, under the direction of the Laurel Four County Fair. In 1914, it was purchased by New York businessman James Butler, who appointed prominent promoter Col. Matt Winn as general manager. The track changed hands several times, including a 1947 acquisition by the Maryland Jockey Club (with plans to shift racing from Pimlico that were later abandoned), before being sold in 1950 to industrialist Morris Schapiro, whose son John D. Schapiro revitalized it and introduced the prestigious Washington, D.C. International Stakes. After further ownership changes, including to Frank DeFrancis in the 1980s and later the Stronach Group, Laurel Park has hosted major events, undergone modernizations, and in recent years served as a key venue for Maryland racing—most notably hosting the Preakness Stakes in 2026 amid Pimlico renovations—while celebrating over a century as a staple of American horse racing.

When Does Laurel Park Race?

Laurel Park’s 2026 live racing schedule features a winter meet running from Friday, January 9, through Sunday, March 29. Additional racing is planned in spring. Laurel Park will host the 151st Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 16, 2026, due to ongoing Pimlico renovations.

What Are the Big Races at Laurel Park?

  • Preakness Stakes (Grade 1) on May 16, 2026 — The undisputed No. 1 event, the second leg of the Triple Crown with a $2 million purse (typically), drawing massive crowds, top 3-year-olds, and global attention. It’s being hosted at Laurel due to Pimlico renovations, marking a historic shift for the 151st running.
  • General George Stakes (Grade 3) on February 14, 2026 — A $200,000 sprint for older horses at 7 furlongs, one of Laurel’s premier winter events and often the highest-purse non-Preakness stakes in the early season.
  • Barbara Fritchie Stakes (Grade 3) on February 14, 2026 — Also $200,000 for fillies and mares at 7 furlongs, run on the same Valentine’s Day card as the General George, making it a major dual-stakes highlight.
  • Miracle Wood Stakes on February 21, 2026 — A $100,000 Preakness prep for 3-year-old colts at 1 mile, key local road to the big race.
  • Wide Country Stakes on February 21, 2026 — $100,000 for 3-year-old fillies at 7 furlongs, the companion Black-Eyed Susan prep on the same card.
