The new Belmont Park racetrack is scheduled to open on September 18, 2026, marking the return of live racing to the historic Elmont, New York site after the previous grandstand was demolished in 2024 for a major $455–555 million redevelopment.
Live racing returns with the fall meet opening on Friday, September 18, 2026, and running through Sunday, December 6, 2026. This expanded meet includes 70+ stakes races worth over $17 million in purses, highlighted by Opening Day’s $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and major weekends like the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and Cigar Mile programs.
The biggest race at Belmont Park is the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. It is one of the most prestigious events in American Thoroughbred racing, traditionally run at 1½ miles on dirt (the longest of the Triple Crown races) and known as “The Test of the Champion.” The 2027 edition (the 159th running) will mark its return to the newly rebuilt Belmont Park after three years at Saratoga.
