The Preakness Stakes is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, and the 2025 edition will be contested at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday May 17.  The upcoming race will be the 150^th running.

First run in 1873, the Preakness Stakes was named after the colt who won the first Dinner Party Stakes at Pimlico.

The Preakness is the shortest of the three Triple Crown races, run at a distance of 1 3/16 miles on dirt. The Kentucky Derby is run on the first Saturday of May at 1 ¼ miles. The Belmont Stakes is run three weeks after the Preakness at 1 ½ miles.

There have been 13 horses that have swept all three jewels of the series. The last to do so was Justify in 2018.

Lukas Wins Seventh Preakness in 2024

Hall of fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas won the 2024 running of the Preakness with longshot Seize the Grey, who went gate to wire and returned $21.60 for a $2 win wager. The 2024 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan was the runner up.

Bob Baffert has won the Preakness a record eight times including in 2023 with national Treasure.

Fillies Have Won Six Editions

The ladies had a long dry spell attempting to win the second jewel of the Triple. Six fillies have won the race, the most recent coming in 2020 where the Ken McPeek trained Swiss Skydiver beat the boys.

Rachel Alexandra won the Black Eyed Susans in 2009, then you must go all the way back to Nellie More in 1924. Others to win the Preakness include Rhine Maiden (1915), Whimsical (1906) and Flocarline (1903).
