Qatar Racing British Champions Day Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes
The second edition of the Qatar Racing British Champions Day Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes gets the thoroughbred action underway at 12.55pm.
Inner City Blues lost his unbeaten record at Newmarket last month but was hugely impressive in two wins before that including the Group 2 July Stakes where he beat Adaay Of Scarlett. Arapaho Gold is also a previous Group 2 scorer, losing his own perfect career start when third in the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury.
Night In Vegas has already made ten times his 60,000 Guineas price tag in prize money and now returns to Ascot having finished fifth in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and won on debut at the track in May. Confucius was sixth in the same race whilst Adaay Of Scarlett finished runner-up and has been gelded having disappointed in his last couple of starts. Satellite Of Love is another with a strong record, second to Night In Vegas in one of those valuable sales races and most recently winning a Listed race at Redcar two weeks ago.
Qatar Racing British Champions Long Distance Cup
The first of five Group 1 races on the day is the Qatar Racing British Champions Long Distance Cup at 1.30pm. Caballo De Mar is the standout on his Prix du Cadran success over Scandinavia two weeks ago and must rate a huge chance if over those exertions. Queenstown is a very able deputy for Ballydoyle in Scandinavia’s absence having won a Group 3 earlier in the year – he was third in the Prix du Cadran too.
Highwayman has progressed at a rate of knots in the last few months and won the St Leger at Doncaster so his ceiling is still far from certain, especially at this new trip. Gregory has returned from injury in arguably better form than ever as a six-year-old with last month’s 11-length demolition in the Rose Bowl Stakes at Newmarket a reminder of his talents.
Wathnan Racing are also represented by Opportunity who just failed to carry top-weight to victory in the Ebor at York. The winner that day, Daiquiri Bay, is also declared here – both won races at Royal Ascot this year. Amiloc was a Group 2 winner at last year’s Royal Meeting and showed aptitude for staying races when a ready winner at Salisbury last month.
Qatar Racing British Champions Sprint Stakes
Next is the Qatar Racing British Champions Sprint Stakes at 2.05pm. The clear standout is Almeraq who got up on the line to win the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot but the judge was certainly not needed when streaking away with Haydock’s Sprint Cup. Paborus was second that day and is one of three in the race for Wathnan Racing.
James Doyle’s pick is Division who has run consistently at the top level without getting his head in front, including a third place in the Commonwealth Cup and a runner-up spot in the Prix Maurice de Gheest. Kind Of Blue completes the Wathnan trio – he won this race in 2024 and had a confidence-boosting victory at Kempton a couple of weeks ago.
Coppull won at Ascot in May and has been largely consistent whilst Samangan travels over from France having won the aforementioned Prix Maurice de Gheest though he was slightly below form in the Prix de la Foret just under two weeks ago. Great Wish represents Denmark with a live chance having most recently won a Group 3 at Deauville – he was a close-up sixth behind Almeraq in June too.
Qatar Racing British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes
The Qatar Racing British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at 2.40pm will see Kalpana go for a historic hat-trick in the race. She has arguably been better than ever this year with her King George success over Calandagan in July showcasing her abilities not only against her own gender.
She was fifth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe but that short turnaround proved no barrier to success in 2025. Minnie Hauk was tenth in that race and her form this year hasn’t quite reached the heights of last, though her second-placed effort behind Ombudsman in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes showed she is still capable of high-class runs.
Sparan Nua gave Kalpana plenty to think about when second to her in the Yorkshire Oaks, a race in which Irish Oaks heroine Johanna Walsh was sixth. Lilt has had just four career runs and remains with potential especially if she improves for the step up in trip here. See The Fire is a second runner for Andrew Balding, also trying this twelve-furlong distance for the first time.
Queen Elizabeth II Stakes
Some of the very best milers around will line up in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Sponsored By Qatar Racing) at 3.20pm. Aidan O’Brien’s Gstaad heads here with an impressive record including a short-head second to the now-retired Bow Echo in the St James’s Palace Stakes – he also won the Irish 2,000 Guineas in May.
Talk Of New York was third in the Royal Ascot race and has been supplemented for this contest having streaked away with the Group 2 Joel Stakes at Newmarket last month.
The Classic generation is also represented by Rayif, the French 2,000 Guineas winner who won the Prix Jacque le Marois in August, and Zavateri, who won the Celebration Mile at Goodwood in August.
The older horses are extremely well represented too. Chief among them is Ten Bob Tony whose form this year has been better than ever including when a shock winner of the Queen Anne Stakes.
More Thunder was second that day and boasts a strong Ascot record, as does Zeus Olympios, winner of the Summer Mile in July and a neck behind Rayif in the Prix Jacques le Marois. Docklands bouncing back wouldn’t be a shock either, the 2025 Queen Anne Stakes always runs his race at Ascot and has the assistance of the newly-crowned Champion Jockey, Billy Loughnane, for the first time.
Qatar Racing Champion Stakes
Last year’s Qatar Racing Champion Stakes was named the joint-best race in the world in 2025 and this year’s contest looks to be a high-quality renewal as well.
Defending champion Calandagan will try to become the third horse this century to win the race twice – he has been given a break since his second-placed effort behind Kalpana in the King George.
The top performer this year on the ratings is Ombudsman whose imperious success in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes was a career-best and he will hope to turn the tables on Calandagan having finished second in this race last year. Third that day was Almaqam and he too has arguably put up his best performances this year, winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup in May and then finishing a narrow second to Item in the Juddmonte International.
Bay City Roller adds even more quality, yet to finish outside the first two this year – his best efforts were a ten-length success on softer ground in the Coronation Cup and then finishing runner-up in the Arc. Aidan O’Brien’s representative is Constitution River who won the Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse earlier in the year before disappointing when third in both the International and Irish Champion Stakes. The field is completed by Devil’s Advocate who usually performs pacemaking duties for stablemate Ombudsman.
Balmoral Handicap
We close as ever with the fiercely competitive Balmoral Handicap (Sponsored By Qatar Racing) at 4.35pm. Last year’s winner Crown Of Oaks will attempt to defend his title and drops back into handicap company having finished second in a Listed race at Sandown in September.
It’s interesting, though, that Tom Marquand takes the ride on Scoville who beat Moonfall in a similar event at Doncaster last time out – that rival was second again in a competitive handicap at Ascot two weeks ago. Gavriel has course form and was a close fourth in the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket having raced on the other side of the track to the first three.
There are plenty with course form in here including Ebt’s Guard, second in this race last year and fourth in the Royal Hunt Cup in June, and Hickory for Saffie Osborne who has already won twice here this year, giving him four wins from 14 starts at the track.
