Racing at Woodbine started in 1874 where the track opened in Toronto. The current track opened in June of n1956. They host the King’s Plate, Canada’s oldest continuously run stakes race. The race is the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown.
The main track at Woodbine is Tapeta, a synthetic surface that is one mile in length. The track has two turf courses. The Inner Turf course is 7/8’s of a mile and the outer is the E.P. Taylor Turf Course that is the only 1 ½ mile turf course in North America.
Woodbine runs nine months out of the year. The meeting will start in April and runs until mid-December each year.
In addition to the King’s Plate there are very prestigious races at Woodbine, some that serve as key preps for the Breeders’ Cup each fall.
Woodbine Mile: A Grade 1 race with a $1 million purse, attracting international competition and part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.
Canadian International Stakes: A Grade 1 event, this race is known for bringing together top turf horses from around the world, with a distance of 1¼ miles.
E.P. Taylor Stakes: A Grade 1 race for fillies and mares, run over 1¼ miles on the turf, named after the track’s founder.
Nearctic Stakes: A Grade 2 sprint race on the turf, with a 6-furlong distance.
Dance Smartly Stakes:
A Grade 2 race for fillies and mares, run at 1⅛ miles on the turf.
Nassau Stakes: A Grade 2 race for fillies and mares at 1 mile on the turf.
Summer Stakes and Natalma Stakes: Both Grade 1 races for two-year-olds, one for colts and geldings, the other for fillies, and both are part of the “Win and You’re In” series for the Breeders’ Cup.
Woodbine Oaks: The first leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara for three-year-old fillies.
