Highlighting the day were incredible, division-topping performances by Sovereignty in the $1 million Whitney Stakes (G1) and Deterministic in the $750,000 Fourstardave Stakes (G1). Both victories deepened already sensational credentials and made both the current leaders in their respective Breeders’ Cup divisions—which they earned automatic berths to through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re In.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series is an international series of stakes races, the winners of which receive automatic starting positions with fees paid into a corresponding race of the 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, to be held at Keeneland Oct. 30-31.
Sovereignty entered the year as the leading favorite for the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) off a stellar 3-year-old campaign that saw him honored as the Eclipse Horse of the Year. The Longines Classic was stated early on as the primary goal for 2026 by owner Godolphin and Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott after the son of Into Mischief was scratched as the favorite a few days before the 2025 Longines Classic with an illness.
Sovereignty Back on Top of Division
However, his year did not get off to the dominant start expected. He was second to White Abarrio in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in April when returning from an eight-month layoff. Then, he ran a disappointing third over a muddy track at Churchill Downs in the Stephen Foster Stakes (G1), beaten 5 1/4 lengths by Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Magnitude. Sovereignty avenged both those defeats Saturday with both Magnitude and White Abarrio distantly in his rearview mirror.
The champion may have given his fans a fright down the backstretch as he dropped into last position, but when jockey Junior Alvarado unleashed his devastating late kick around the far turn, the Sovereignty of old was back. He had Nitrogen, a champion filly taking on the boys, to catch, and he did so with ease. He rushed by the pacesetter and opened up 4 3/4 lengths on the field by the time he completed 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.91.
Nitrogen, who clinched a Challenge Series berth to the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) with a win in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) June 6 at Saratoga, battled gamely to prove herself among the nation’s best horses while finishing a neck ahead of Antiquarian. Her runner-up finish in the Longines Classic Win and You’re In event only furthered her role as the Longines Distaff’s summer favorite.
As for Sovereignty, his redemption warmed the hearts of his large fanbase and connections.
“It’s great standing here on Whitney day with him draped in the blanket of flowers again,” Godolphin USA director of bloodstock Michael Banahan said. “Just the affections the fans have shown him today was enormous. At Saratoga, they appreciate the very best horses, and I think we have one of those.”
Deterministic Extends Win Streak in Fourstardave
Sovereignty will have the opportunity to solidify his legacy as one of the very best in the Longines Classic, and Deterministic will have the same after earning a Challenge Series berth to the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) with his Fourstardave win.
The son of 2015 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Liam’s Map showed his ability to overcome adversity Saturday when a downpour began in the minutes before the race, lasting throughout the 1-mile contest.
Trainer Miguel Clement was not surprised that the 5-year-old could handle it, having proclaimed the horse as one of the nation’s best over the last two seasons. There is little room to argue with him as, ever since Kendrick Carmouche joined the saddle, Deterministic has won six straight races and four Grade 1s.
“We always thought he was special from Day 1,” Clement said of the horse owned by St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable. “He’s taken his training to another level. I can’t keep saying enough; he’s special, he’s built different—distance, versatility, ground. For me, he’s the leader of the division. I’ve been saying that for two years now, and hopefully everyone agrees now.”
Carmouche worked out a perfect stalking trip in second while Mi Bago set moderate fractions on a firm turf course getting wetter by the second. When Carmouche gave the cue in the stretch, he accelerated and put a talented field of rivals away by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:35.07. Mi Bago battled on for second and Zulu Kingdom (IRE) was third.
Deterministic also won the Fourstardave last year but was sidelined prior to the Breeders’ Cup, missing his chance to compete in the FanDuel Mile. The Hinkle Farms-bred runner will now get another opportunity and seems a legitimate threat to take the FanDuel Mile for America in a race that is always loaded with high-quality international prospects.
